Mental Game:<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-3'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youthsportspsychology.com\/youth_sports_psychology_blog\/help-kids-boost-confidence-with-the-confident-sports-kid-cds\/#Improve_Your_Mental_Game_From_Anywhere_In_The_World\" >Improve Your Mental Game From Anywhere In The World<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Beliefs they hold to that undermine their confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>They include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>High expectations (I have to score 20 points in the game today).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Negative names they call themselves (I\u2019m not quick enough to play point guard).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI can\u2019t\u201d statements (I can\u2019t shoot 3-pointers).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Goofy beliefs (I only score goals if I\u2019m wearing polka-dotted underwear).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe your young athletes don\u2019t wear polka-dotted underwear. But we bet your sports kids have displayed some, if not all, of these tendencies from time-to-time. If they haven\u2019t, they\u2019re not human!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s the good news:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"You_can_help_them_identify_and_overcome_these_beliefs\"><\/span>You can help them identify and overcome these beliefs.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>First, they need to look at the types of beliefs we mention above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They then should identify some of the ways their thoughts and feelings fall into these categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, your sports kids might say,<em> \u201cI definitely have the \u2018I can\u2019t statement\u2019 problem. I\u2019m always telling myself I\u2019m not quick enough to play defense.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve helped your sports kids identify these beliefs, you want to help them replace these beliefs with more <strong>positive<\/strong> ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, your kids might tell themselves,<em> \u201cI\u2019m too small to be a smarter.\u201d<\/em> Have them change this to: <em>\u201cI\u2019m really quick and have good hands. The team needs me for these abilities.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, when they\u2019re practicing, make sure they stay tuned in to their negative beliefs. They should remind themselves to replace them with more <strong>positive,<\/strong> realistic ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may take time, but tell them to be patient.
