Or they hold super high expectations, telling themselves they MUST grab all there rebounds or score most of the points in a game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another no-no is the \u201cI can\u2019t\u201d statement. Kids say things like, <em>\u201cI can\u2019t kick a ball far enough; I can\u2019t make that kind of pass.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They even hold onto silly beliefs that they think will improve their performance. They may insist that they wear the same blue socks every game, and that to wash them would be bad luck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All these ideas and beliefs \u201cstink\u201d as much as the unwashed socks. Yet, they\u2019re very common&#8211;and they hurt kids\u2019 <strong>confidence!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But you, as sports parents, can help them identify and then understand why these beliefs hurt them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"You_can_also_help_them_overcome_them\"><\/span>You can also help them overcome them.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To begin with, help your sports kids identify some of the <strong>beliefs\u2014like<\/strong> the ones above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do they call themselves negative names?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do they hold super high expectations?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do they tell themselves, \u201cI can\u2019t.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do they hang onto silly ideas about what brings them good luck?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you\u2019ve helped your sports kids identify these beliefs, you want to help them replace these beliefs with more <strong>positive<\/strong> ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If, for example, your sports kids says,<em> \u201cI need to grab all the rebounds,\u201d<\/em> help them understand that this will put undue pressure on them and cause them to feel frustrated if\u2014and when\u2014they fail. Ask them to replace those high expectations with more reasonable ones\u2014smaller, more achievable <strong>goals.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cI am going to go hard for every ball today,\u201d<\/em> for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You want them to <strong>focus<\/strong> on the <strong>process<\/strong>\u2014not so much on the score and on their statistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While they&#8217;re practicing, they want to remind themselves to avoid negative thinking and high expectations.
