Instead, they should embrace the ideas of <strong>commitment,<\/strong> sacrifice, priorities and heart, he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cOnce athletes establish a <strong>goal,<\/strong> they need to dedicate themselves to moving toward that goal,\u201d<\/em> he says. They can do that by embracing these values, he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>goals<\/strong> kids establish should have deep meaning for them, Mango says. As they move toward their goals, they will encounter challenges. In order to deal with those challenges, they must make sacrifices. That involves prioritizing, he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, should they stay up late at a party before a game or should they go to bed early? They need to decide what\u2019s most important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Setting_Goals\"><\/span>Setting Goals<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Setting priorities helps kids prepare themselves for <strong>adversity<\/strong> in sports. In addition, dealing with adversity requires <strong>heart<\/strong> and <strong>passion.<\/strong> Their sports experience should be driven by what they feel on the inside\u2014not on what they look like on the outside, he stresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Too often, kids don\u2019t accept this viewpoint. They don\u2019t take responsibility for what happens in sports and don\u2019t take ownership for their actions, he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019ve listened to a lot of parents. It concerns me that they place the responsibility\u2026 on bad refs and bad calls and coaches,\u201d<\/em> says Mango.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s not that you want to belittle your kids\u2019 efforts. But it\u2019s important to understand that their <strong>successes<\/strong> are in their hands.
