Coaches tell females to act more like men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, <strong>truth<\/strong> is, girls and women don\u2019t approach sports in the same way men approach sports, says Joan Steidinger, author of <em>&#8220;Sisterhood in Sports: How Female Athletes Collaborate and Compete.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many female athletes like to <strong>focus<\/strong> on relationships in sports, says Steidinger, a <strong>psychologist<\/strong> and former competitive ultrarunner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Steidinger came to this conclusion after interviewing 130 athletes over five years, from teenagers to 88-year-olds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI noticed females were criticized for their <strong>focus<\/strong> on relationships,\u201d<\/em> she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;Male coaches tend to tell girls to be like boys,\u201d<\/em> she says,<em> \u201cCoaches need to take into consideration: Women are not small men.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on her research, boys want to play and compete, while girls focus on relationships. They like the social aspect of sports, she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cCollaboration and bonding is important.
