Kids are hard on themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They tend to beat themselves up and <strong>focus<\/strong> on their mistakes after a game. They don\u2019t need parents and coaches <strong>focusing<\/strong> on mistakes, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of beating themselves up, kids really need to understand that mistakes and failure are an opportunity to learn and grow. After a game or performance, that\u2019s what parents and coaches need to <strong>focus<\/strong> on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cYou need to talk to your kids about learning,\u201d<\/em> says <strong>mental game<\/strong> expert Dr. Patrick Cohn in the podcast discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIf the kids are young, it\u2019s about the experience of being there. It\u2019s all about getting along with kids in the group and taking feedback from a coach.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>If they\u2019re older, they should <strong>focus<\/strong> on what they did well and what they can improve on.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a game, be sure that your young athletes aren\u2019t <strong>focused<\/strong> on making other people happy\u2014whether they\u2019re friends, parents or coaches.
