If so, read on&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ve got some tips\u2014and warnings\u2014for you about what we call \u201cbully coaches.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First of all, our warning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Coaches who teach by being negative or intimidating<\/strong> can really hurt your kids\u2019 <strong>confidence<\/strong> and enjoyment of sports. No, these coaches do NOT toughen up your young athletes, as they might insist. They don\u2019t improve kids\u2019 performance, either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Actually, coaches who bully\u2014either with harsh words or physical harm\u2014can hurt young athletes\u2019 <strong>self-esteem,<\/strong> undermine their social skills and make it hard for them to <strong>trust.<\/strong> In some cases, these coaches can make kids feel anxious and depressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What\u2019s more, coaches who use such negative feedback are generally <strong>focused<\/strong> too much on one thing: winning the game or competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They give kids the message that winning is everything. That makes kids <strong>focus<\/strong> too much on outcomes\u2014such as the score or win. It can prevent them from reaping the social and emotional benefits of taking part in sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Focusing_too_much_on_the_score_or_win_also_can_hurt_kids_performance\"><\/span>Focusing too much on the score or win also can hurt kids\u2019 performance.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They often develop fear of failure. That means they stop taking risks and they play too tentatively. That\u2019s because they\u2019re afraid the coach will yell at them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Watch for signs that your sports kids are being bullied. They may be afraid of the coach, <strong>focus<\/strong> too much on trying to impress the coach, and they may be afraid of going to practice. They may say they want to quit the team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"You_as_parents_and_coaches_can_do_a_lot_to_help_kids_who_are_bullied_by_their_coaches\"><\/span>You, as parents and coaches, can do a lot to help kids who are bullied by their coaches.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you see or hear about a coach who yells at, intimidates or insults kids, you should take action. If you merely sit back and complain, you\u2019re part of the problem. Instead, you need to begin by talking to the coach. You can gently suggest that his or her behavior may hurt kids\u2019 <strong>confidence.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If that doesn\u2019t work, you can file a complaint with the coach\u2019s superiors in the league.
