Mental Game:<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-3'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youthsportspsychology.com\/youth_sports_psychology_blog\/how-nutrition-impacts-kids-confidence-in-sports\/#Improve_Your_Mental_Game_From_Anywhere_In_The_World\" >Improve Your Mental Game From Anywhere In The World<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s an important link between what kids <strong>eat<\/strong> and their confidence in sports, says Kimberly Lackey, founder of Empath Coaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;When I think of confidence, I think of mood,&#8221;<\/em> she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;You want to keep kids away from food that might sap energy or cause foul moods and steer them toward healthier options.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sugary foods<\/strong>, she says, can cause kids to crash quickly, which can undermine their confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;Instead, focus on healthy carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are a good food that helps boost serotonin and provides good clean energy,&#8221;<\/em> she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nutrition can also affect your young athletes\u2019 <strong>fear of failure<\/strong>, says Lackey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;I live in Florida, where it&#8217;s excessively hot. Football players who aren&#8217;t properly hydrated or who lack proper nutrition can really feel the heat, and having the confidence that they&#8217;ll be nutritionally able to get through the game is a huge mental edge,&#8221;<\/em> says Lackey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"She_also_says_that_in_hot_weather_limiting_sugar_and_soft_drinks_is_critical\"><\/span>She also says that in hot weather, limiting sugar and soft drinks is critical.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;Sugar, coffee, and soft drinks cause dehydration and can cause headaches for some kids too.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aside from this, both sugar and caffeine are known to enhance the effects of stress and anxiety, which will only further hurt your kids\u2019 mental game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While low-carb diets are touted as healthy, these diets can hurt athletes &#8211; especially young athletes, she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Low-carb diets make it harder for kids to burn glycogen, which is the source of energy most often used for exercise and to power kids\u2019 muscles and decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If young athletes don\u2019t have enough glycogen stored up in their muscles, their bodies will start breaking down protein to make glucose for energy instead, which hurts the formation of muscles.
