Mental Game:<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-3'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youthsportspsychology.com\/youth_sports_psychology_blog\/using-sports-psychology-to-overcome-a-cold-streak\/#Improve_Your_Mental_Game_From_Anywhere_In_The_World\" >Improve Your Mental Game From Anywhere In The World<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Mary Nhin\u2019s son, Kobe, began competing in tennis a couple of years ago and was winning most of his games\u2026 until he hit a cold streak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe began going into super tiebreakers, a very short determining point system, and he would get very nervous, and he would end up losing,\u201d says Nhin, the co-author, along with Kobe, of \u201cHow to Win the Wimbledon in Pajamas.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He knew his <strong>mental skills <\/strong>needed work, so he started researching mental toughness and the mental game in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His journey into the world of mental toughness turned Kobe into a much stronger athlete and inspired Kobe and Mary to write a series of books on the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Nhin_stresses_awareness_as_a_key_to_getting_her_son_mentally_strong_for_his_matches\"><\/span>Nhin stresses awareness as a key to getting her son mentally strong for his matches.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKobe figured out he would have this vicious cycle when the game was coming up, or the score was close. He would begin to have thoughts about what would happen in the future. Being aware of those thoughts or feelings was the first step for him to being able to stop that cycle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nhin and Kobe give five tips in \u201cHow to Win Wimbledon in Pajamas.\u201d  Stay calm using mantras, stay <strong>confident<\/strong> through <strong>visualization<\/strong>; be motivated through outcome goals and process goals; stay focused, and remain carefree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He focused on the moment and not outcomes&#8211;as long as he was trying his best and strategizing throughout the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor Kobe, one of his most powerful mantras is \u2018work hard, fast feet.\u2019 It keeps him focused and keeps any negative thoughts out of his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of times, athletes will think \u2018This is too hard, I can\u2019t do this,\u2019 and having a <strong>positive mantra <\/strong>actively stops them from thinking so negatively.\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Goals and motivation can\u2019t come from parents or coaches; they have to be intrinsic. Kobe has long- term goals like playing for a Division 1 college. She also says keeping a \u201cgrowth mindset\u201d is an important part of staying mentally strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you are thinking with a growth mindset, every setback or loss is leading you one step closer to your outcome goal.
