That&#8217;s a question Dr. Steve Horan, an expert in community health improvement, asked himself after many years of being a coach and sports parent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&nbsp;&#8220;As you look at the numbers, so many kids drop out at age 13 and 14 for many different reasons,&#8221;<\/em> he says. <em>&#8220;So I began to ask myself, \u2018What value can we deliver through youth sports above and beyond the value that is delivered to the excellent athlete?'&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He realized that sports can help kids develop important <strong>traits<\/strong> and skills that transfer to other parts of life, he told us in a recent interview&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through sports, young athletes can value <strong>wellness<\/strong>, learn how to hold onto their <strong>ethics<\/strong> in a competitive environment, develop <strong>good relationships<\/strong> with parents and coaches, become more <strong>self-directed<\/strong>, learn how to be <strong>team players<\/strong>, and learn how to be <strong>leaders<\/strong>, he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, he says, young athletes don&#8217;t develop these <strong>social and emotional<\/strong> <strong>assets<\/strong> without some help from parents and coaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;Parents and coaches have to be very vigilant to ensure that sports have this desired goal of character development,&#8221;<\/em> says the founder of sports parent.net.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CParents_need_to_be_good_consumers%E2%80%9D_he_says\"><\/span><em>&#8220;Parents need to be good consumers,&#8221;<\/em> he says.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They need to make the right decisions about coaching their own children and finding the right programs for their kids.<em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;The goal,&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;he says, &#8220;<em>is helping kids become happy and productive adults.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youthsportspsychology.com\/\">The Ultimate Sports Parent<\/a> and Kids&#8217; Sports Psychology Kids&#8217; Sports Psychology, we agree.
