Sports Kids And Negative Self-Talk

Some sports kids get into a bad mental game habits: They call themselves names.

It sounds like this:I’m not a defensive player. I’m too skinny to play football. I’m a terrible point guard. I’m a choker. I’m the smallest kid on the team so I’m the worst.”

And on and on…

At first glance, this may sound like your young athletes are being humble.

Truth is, they’re hurting their confidence–and their game. Too often, statements such as “I’m a choker,” become a self-fulfilling prophesy.

How do you help sports kids who call themselves negative names?

First of all, help your kids understand that they’re calling themselves negative names. Explain how it can hurt their confidence.

Second, help them identify the negative terms they label themselves with. Ask your kids to write down these negative terms. Then ask them to replace them with positive self-statements.

For example, instead of “I’m too small to be a starter,” you might suggest, “I’m really quick and have good hands.”

Understand that kids are not going to make these changes overnight.

If your kids get frustrated, remind them that it takes time to learn new mental game skills—in the same way it takes time to learn new physical skills!
